In 1492 Columbus visited Haiti and in 1677 it became a French
colony. In 1804 it gained independence following a rebellion led
by former slave Toussaint L'Ouverture. From 1915 to 1934 The
United States occupied the country. In 1957 Dr. Francois
Duvalier was elected President and in 1964 he was named President
for life. On his death in 1971, his son, Jean-Claude succeeded
the Presidency. In 1975 to 1977, drought caused severe famine
and in 1980, hurricane Allen destroyed most of the rice, bean and
coffee crop. Haiti is the poorest nation in the Western
hemisphere and in 1987 unemployment was estimated to be 50%. On
February 7, 1986, after months of unrest, Jean-Claude left the
country for exile in France. A new constitution and government
was established in 1987. @
